The World Collabs #3

This month I decided to enter Abduzeedo's World Collabs competition that spotlights a novice designer by giving them an opportunity to work with a file supplied by an industry expert. You mess with the file, collab it up, and the winner gets bragging rights they've officially collab'd with this super cool already-made-it-big big deal of a designer (oh, and also $200). They've just posted all of the entries, and if you scroll alllllll the way down to #62 you can check out my interpretation. The winner is determined based on all the comments gathered from viewers (that could be you!) as well as the designer who created the original file (in this case, James White), and the Abduzeedo staff. So whoever you like best (don't worry, I won't take your un-vote to heart) please, pleaseeee be sure to show your support to your favorite by heading to the showcase by clicking here and leaving a comment mentioning which number you feel deserves the prize. You don't even need to become a 'member' to leave a comment! Easy, right? Here's a preview of what my entry looks like:

Baseball Cupcakes!

This past week we celebrated a co-worker's birthday. He just happens to be a ginormous Atlanta Braves fan, and I just happened to be in charge of the cupcakes, hence, baseball cupcakes! The flavor couldn't be anything other than FANfetti, with extra decorative wrappers, and a generous dose of vanilla whipped frosting with just regular red icing gel for the baseball detailing. I printed up a bunch of mini jerseys and once I had them all cut, I put a few of our names on the backs, but for the most part, kept with the current roster and mixed in some popular oldies. I taped all the jerseys to red and blue toothpicks and stuck em in each cake to finish it all off. Anddddd here is the deliciousness we all partook in!

ch-ch-ch-changes

I admit it, the bokeh had to go. I also admit that it probably wasn't one of the smartest decisions to begin with. So, welcome to my blog's third style in 2 months. I apologize for my fickle sense of blogger design direction, but hopefully I'll find a final aesthetic appeasing blog look soon. I'm also debating a switch to tumblr, and trying to get all my research complete before I take that step. I've been reading up on it a lot, but of course, there are always things that users would know better than anyone that hasn't used it before and is trying to figure everything out for the first time. So if there are any of you out there that could offer up some tips or helpful advice, it would be greatly appreciated/tumblr-ific? (sorry)

Boilermaker 2010 = Complete!

If you grew up in Utica, New York, there are a few things you would never miss out on.

One
Our amazingly delicious half moon cookies, which I've found southerners and many others refer to as 'black and white cookies.' Just a footnote: black and white cookies are not the same; you must make the trek for this mouthwatering treat if you're a cookie fanatic, or find yourself, somehow, in central New York and remember to cruise on down to the local grocers to pick up this made daily delight.

Two
Chicken Riggies. If you're lucky enough to come across a recipe online, give it a try. It's a hometown original, and every year, the city of Utica has a Riggie Fest where local restaurants that keep riggies on their menus, battle it out for the number one taste.

Three
Tomato Pie. Pizza without cheese? Don't mind if I do. I know, it sounds weird and if you love cheese it's an instant 'no' from the brain misfirings of 'wtf did you just say?' But yea, I know it sounds odd to eat some crust and sauce (especially when I put it that way) but the taste...the seasoning....it's a must. Also, all of the other italian food that is very heavily present in the area is always worth trying and not feeling guilty about.

There are many more, but to keep with the title of this post, the fourth is obviously the annual 15k we all grew up hearing about, The Boilermaker. When you're a high school athlete, you always have it in mind to complete the race, but many of us make excuses, or let everything else going on get in the way of putting in the time to train. 15k/9.3miles is a good amount, and is pretty intimidating if you're not a consistent running fan. I always thought I might take part, but I, like so many others, made excuses. If you read my previous boilermaker post, you know that I had a purpose going into this. Because of Sean, I have this incredible feeling of accomplishment within me, and I did this thing, this race that I had been thinking about for years, this race I had kind-of trained for before..I did it. And if I ever make a real bucket list, this sucker's going on it, and there will be one big beautiful check nearby.

Here are some of my memories from my trip home for the 33rd annual Boilermaker Road Race, the greatest 15k in the country.

Misc Memories

our post-race less sweaty, seriously still sore pic

one last memory worth mentioning. Shawna and I carved our names into this tree in our woods which we revisted when I was home. We couldn't remember the exact date when we did this, and to our amazement, we did this almost exactly 11 years ago. The actual date (kind of hard to see) is June 30, 1999. I was 13!

TypeOH! Tuesday #7

It's Tuesday! And this one came extra fast because I just flew in last night. I didn't have internet access while I was back home, so I apologize about the lack of posts, but now I'm back! I'm really looking forward to putting up pictures from my race (probably tomorrow) so in the meantime, enjoy some type!

The Boilermaker, 2010

I'm running a 15k this weekend! I've been training long and hard for awhile now, and am soooo excited the time is finally here!

Three years ago, one of my very best friends collapsed at the 6 mile mark of the 9.3mile race at the age of 24. He passed away shortly after from a heart arrhythmia he never knew he had. Now that I'm 24, I'm finishing this race for him, and doing it all in his memory.

This sunday, my youngest sister will be running along my side, and as we approach the starting line with 13,000 other runners, it will be a moment, and an experience I am sure I will remember for the rest of my life.

So here's to you Sean, I miss you more than anything.

And, with doing this for Sean, I knew I couldn't disappoint him by wearing a lame plain running t... So my sister and I will be wearing some custom designed hand painted shirts I finished this week. Check em out!

Blackletter, #3

More blackletter work, as promised :) No tracing and no calligraphy pen! Just my lovely mechanical pencil, sharpie pen, and my good (not so good?) eye.

lost & found

yes is a good word..most of the time.. except when comic sans, tomatoes, pickles, and cold weather are involved (first things that came to mind) oh, and when a co-worker chooses to take my parking spot. That one always deserves a no.

TypeOH! Tuesday #6

Happy Tuesday! I should probably mention that all of my TypeOh! Tuesday stuff plus blacklettering, etc. can be found collectively on my flickr, inside the hand lettering album. I've got a few more lyric letterings than last week, and as always, their titles are linked to youtube vids for happy listening. Enjoy!

slight site update

I've finally updated the hand lettering section of my portfolio page, with my current selection of personally deemed greats. Also, I threw a flickr icon on the bottom of each page, so if you fancy a visit to the flickr universe, it's a good one way ticket :)

Blackletter, #2

I've decided I'm going to keep with this blackletter thing, even though it takes a good amount of time and patience to see through. My goal is to get one blackletter post up per week, and I'm going to try my best to stick to that..even if it's just one drawing, like this week. I feel like I'm starting to get the hang of this :)
