TypeOh! Tuesday #53

This week I'm rounding up a few of my favorite pieces of type found online. I love running across type that I have to stop and stare at, and really pull apart in my head. Finding so many great pieces just makes me love type that much more. Happy Tuesday!

Vintage Celebration Kit

Happy Friday! Maybe it's just me but it took today foreverrrrr to get here this week. Got this little kit up on Graphic River earlier in the week; still playing around with vintage-y modern projects with some nice typography mixed in. I love the feeling you get when you can just tell you're getting better at something the more you do it. I think I'll stay in this little niche a tad bit longer before I move on to the next thing..still figuring out what that might be :) Anyway! I hope you have an AMAZING fun filled Memorial Day! I will be cleaning my apartment for good this time, hanging more things on my sad grey walls, and hopefully laying by a pool. See you next week!

TypeOh! Tuesday #52

Happy Tuesday!!! Today marks a full year of TypeOh!s. Pretty amazing. However long you've been along for the ride, thank you. It means a lot to be able to doodle my way to your computer screen each week. This week I've put together my favorites from the past year. If you're curious to see the evolution of my hand type from a year ago to today, check out my flickr. Kind of amazing how much you can improve on something so simple by sticking to it every week for a year :) The next year is going to be a little different than this past one with the typeohs. Since I've been working on (what seems like) a million different things on the side, I need to be smart about how/where I spread my time, as is probably the case with anything. I can't bring myself to throwing something together last minute when the weeks get longer than usual - because only the opposite of progress happens then. In an effort to maintain good quality of my work, I've decided to keep up with TypeOh! Tuesday every week, but some weeks it might be a post about great typography I find on the web, and others I'll throw something I draw in there. I hope you still stick around! Thanks again for hanging out :)

The National Stationery Show + NYC

So I think I should warn you ahead of time how massive this post is. I guess you don't realize how much you actually experienced until you go through your capture-all-awesome-moments photo collection..which is what I ended up with. An amazing collection of amazing experiences elapsed over three unforgettable days.

After I arrived Saturday afternoon, we walked around the city, got some extra awesome ny pizza, then walked the brooklyn bridge later that night. It drizzled/misted a little, but just felt perfectly refreshing on such a cool night.

The next morning we got to Javits just before 730, just in time to get registered for the Seth Godin lecture and panel discussion! I was soooo stoked to see him speak, I had watched what seems like every talk he's done that have been put online. I never thought I'd be just a few rows back while he delivered one of his super inspirational talks! After the lecture, the show had gotten well underway and we went off to explore. One of the first things we came across was a paper runway, all of these dresses are made of paper!

And then it was off to the booths!

During the show, there was a 'recipe card scavenger hunt' with cards printed out of different paper stocks and processes. There were 15 in all scattered throughout the show, and of course I scavenged myself the full set!

Once we had a good first walk through of the stationery show, we headed over to the International Contemporary Furniture Fair, or ICFF. My friend Nina is an interior designer, so we went to check out some potential contacts for her. While she mingled, I guess I just took pictures of awesome lighting. Pretty funny, I didn't even realize that's what I was focusing on until I went through the photos!

(i love this little rain cloud)

..and it was all amazing because of my incredible friend, Nina. (That's her, on the left :)

TypeOh! Tuesday #51

Happy Tuesday! I'm making my way back to Atlanta today, and I'll be sure to post pics as soon as I get through all the good ones! This week's type was made with some black acrylic paint I had sitting around, and a paintbrush that turned out to be not so reliable the more I used it. I bet you can guess when I started not bothering with straight, clean blocks of black anymore :)

NYC!

Pretty lame blogger stole away everyone's last post and comments..not sure if you heard - but it went down for almost a full day yesterday. I'll repost those vids with next week's music post if it doesn't come back by then. In the meantime, just wanted to let everyone know the digital fold freebie for next week will get posted wednesday instead of monday because I'll be in NYC!!! (typeoh will still happen tuesday). I'm so, soooo excited for this, charging my camera tonight because it'll be taking more than a few pics! Happy Friday the 13th (and Happy Birthday to my Mom and sister!) Have a GREAT weekend!

Homemade Business Cards

I have some SUPER exciting news! I'm going to the National Stationery Show this weekend!!! You have to understand, this is like Christmas for me - and what's even better, I'll be staying with one of my very best friends who I haven't hugged in years. Permanent smile on this face. So, after I found out I was able to go, I realized I didn't have any company business cards to hand out! I've been working up some good ideas that we plan to letterpress, but the time just wasn't there to rush it (plus letterpress rushed never sounds like a good idea, anyway). I had to figure something out, so I turned to the stack of Neenah Desert Storm 120# cardstock we have sitting in our conference room... and this is what I did with it.

Once I got my concept for the card together, I created an 8 up of the front and back of the card and printed with a regular inkjet on an 8.5"x11" sheet of the stock. Then came the cutting..a Husky utility knife has been my knife of choice since art school - and in my opinion, soooo much safer than those silly x-actos.

Once that was done, I put a small notch on the left side of each one for the info label that was going to wrap around it.

Next came the label printing. To make each label like a sticker, I used 3M positionable mount adhesive, which is basically spray mount without the spray. It comes in a big roll which, once unrolled is sticky on one side. You put what you want on it, get it good and stuck, then peel the backing off and poof! you've got yourself a sticker. This is the exact kind I used in case you want to try it out :)

To add an extra bit of subtle detail, I ran some silver around all of the edges of the card and label using a sharpie silver poster marker.

Next, I peeled the backings off of my label 'stickers' and began sticking! And here are the results:

Phew! Officially ready for the show :)
